Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi /The Azerbaijan's opposition Communist Party (CP) made a decision to support Ilham Aliyev's candidature, in 2008 Presidential elections. "We consider that the candidate who have the most chances in the presidential election, is the current President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev", stated Rustam Shahsuvarov, the Chairman of the Communist Party, to Trend on 25 December.
The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) has already highlighted its decision to put forward Ilham Aliyev's candidature in the upcoming presidential elections. According to Shahsuvarov, the CP decided not to participate in the Presidential elections with its own candidate. The party analyzed the existing situation, the opportunities of the political forces and decided to support the current President.
"There are well-known political figure in the opposition as well, but we consider that Ilham Aliyev may do more for the Country than the opposition leaders," Shahsuvarov added. In addition, he said that the party made this decision to protect the statehood and national interests.
The right Communist Party of Azerbaijan considers itself as the constructive opposition, with regards to the power. According to the official data, the party brings together 6,000 people which make up 0.5% of Azerbaijani population. According to the official data by the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, the number of the citizens having the voting right in the Country, is 4mln 600,000.
