Azerbaijan, Baku, 26 February / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The Democratic Elections Centre, which unites nine opposition parties, has called for opposition parties in Azerbaijan to reject the obligations taken before the Council of Europe on peaceful settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The Democratic Elections Centre unites the Classic Popular Front, Azadlig, National-Democratic, Great Establishment, Popular Front of United Azerbaijan, Great Azerbaijan, Open Society, Takamul and Green parties.
"An appeal will be made to the chairmen of the opposition parties who are signatories on behalf of the Democratic Elections Centre," Iskandar Hamidov, the chairman of National-Democratic Party, stated to journalists during the 'Karabakh forum' in Baku.
Joining the Council of Europe in 2001 Azerbaijan assumed an obligation on the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Alongside the Azerbaijani State, the document regarding obligations was signed by the leaders of the opposition parties, Popular Front of Azerbaijan, National Independence, Musavat, Democratic and Liberal.
Gamidov believes that those opposition leaders should withdraw their signatures as the only means of settling the conflict is possibly through war. Ilyas Ismailov, former chairman of Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, has no regrets about signing the document.
The political scientist Zardusht Alizadeh, considers that the demand s made by the Centre is nonsense. He believes that the parties will not pay attention on the current demand of the Centre. "Even if those parties withdraw their signatures, nobody will pay attention to such a step," Alizadeh stated.
