Azerbaijan’s Human Trafficking Victims Taken Mostly to United Arab Emirates and Turkey: Deputy Interior Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku, 31 October/ Trend , corr I. Alizade/ Azerbaijan's national coordinator on Fight against Human Trafficking says victims of human trafficking are mostly taken to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkey.

"Victims of human trafficking are taken to Azerbaijan mostly from Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine and Moldova," Vilayat Eyvazov, national coordinator of Azerbaijan for Fight against Human Trafficking and deputy interior minister said to journalists.

The human trafficking-related crimes increased by 53.36% in 2008.

In 2008, 324 human trafficking-related crimes were discovered which 199 facts is more than the figure of 2007. As many as 336 people were made criminally liable in 2008 with victims of human trafficking totaling to 72. As many as 41 of 79 wanted people have been detained. Six criminals have been detained through Interpol.

As many as 38 criminal groups engaged in human trafficking were detained this year.

Those engaged in human trafficking use Azerbaijan both as source and transit country, he said. 

Criminals engaged in human trafficking in Azerbaijan are not reported to be harbored by high-rank persons, he added.

Women account for 90% of those dealing with human trafficking.

Measures are being taken to set up rehabilitation centers for victims of human trafficking. A special Center has been founded under the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, he noted.

"Rehabilitation centers are expected to be set up in the regions as well. As many as 41 human trafficking victims were provided with compensation last year," he said.
