The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan has invited all interested parties to participate in the process of verification
of signature lists submitted by initiative groups on referendum.
"This process may include representatives of press, international
organizations, and members of initiative groups. Their participation will prove
the transparency of the process of verification of voters' signatures," CEC
chairman Mazahir Panahov said.
In late December, Azerbaijan's parliament passed a decision to hold a referendum on March 18 to amend 29 Articles of the Constitution.
A total of 14 referendum initiative groups have been launched thus far. Four of them have submitted referendum membership lists to the Central Election Commission. The CEC registered initiative group of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party on Jan. 22.
The constituencies have registered 45 initiative groups.
The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.
Panahov said about 600 telegrams came from
separate agencies of Azerbaijan in support of the referendum.
10 applications were submitted to the Commission from members of initiative
groups of opposition parties. They returned membership lists to the Committee
due to they have failed to collect signatures.
