Oppositional agitation groups on referendum in Azerbaijan fail to agree upon joint cooperation

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb.11 / Trend corr A.Huseynbala / A closing meeting of agitation groups on referendum in Azerbaijan, formed by opposition parties, focused on discussion of joint cooperation. However, an agreement on this issue was not reached.  

"A proposal on cooperation based on mutual liability was approved only by National-Democratic Party, represented in the agitation group, formed by the Union for the sake of Democracy," chairman of the Azerbaijani Democratic Party, represented in the Movement for the sake of Karabakh and Republic, Sardar Jalaloglu told Trend after the closing meeting on Feb.11. 

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend the Constitution.

The CEC registered New Azerbaijan Party, Shahar, Huquq va Demokratiya, Vatandash Jamiyyati , For Long-term Development and Zaka as agitation initiative groups. Abad Kand and Azad Soz initiative groups failed to pass registration.

As many as 124 initiative groups were registered in the Constituencies.

The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

Jalaloglu said the Classic National Front, Azadlig, the Great Azerbaijan and National parties, which formed the agitation group, intend to express their positions after discussions over the joint cooperation.

The agitation group of the National Independence Party didn't attend the event.
