Russia has suffered a diplomatic defeat, using the veto at a meeting of the UN Security Council on extending the mandate of the UN mission in Georgia, Foreign Minister of Georgia Grigol Vashadze said today at a special briefing.

"Russia has used the veto, which is considered a diplomatic defeat. Veto is like nuclear weapons, which indicates that you remained in isolation and you have to use it" he said.

According to Vashadze, Georgia has fulfilled its promise and did not put into question international legal norms of territorial integrity of Georgia.

The UN Security Council expressed support for Georgia, 10 countries, and four abstentions - China, Libya, Vietnam and Uganda. "Later, the representative of China reiterated the commitment to the territorial integrity of Georgia", he added.

The minister thanked all those countries which served his mission in Abkhazia over 16 years. "This is not always possible because of the position of Russia, but we will gladly bid farewell to the UN mission," - he said
