Turkmen President visits Bulgaria

On Aug. 26, Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov paid an official visit to Bulgaria. The visit, which aims to define a common approach to further cooperation, was initiated by Sofia, a Turkmen official source said.

The possibility of joint projects based on the parties' resources and economic potential is on the agenda. "Bulgaria is one of the countries interested in completing the European Nabucco pipeline project, which aims to deliver energy resources from the Caspian region. Turkmenistan, along with Azerbaijan, is one of the potential suppliers of natural gas.

According to the governmental Prepress-service, high level talks held in Sofia is another indicator of the intergovernmental dialogue being intensified in recent years.

This is Berdimuhammedov's return visit. In December 2008, Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov visited Turkmenistan. During the visit the parties signed both a memorandum on an understanding on energy cooperation and also intergovernmental agreements on economic cooperation. In addition, the sides reached a preliminary agreement on the export of Turkmen gas. Berdimuhammedov will visit Turkey following his visit to Bulgaria.

Turkmenistan and Bulgaria have signed 7 documents. 20 projects worth $7.3 million and 140.7 million manat are being carried out in Turkmenistan with the participation of Bulgarian companies. Turkmenistan exports products from fuel-energy and agricultural spheres and imports mainly food, transport facilities, equipment and medicines.

According to the Turkmen Economy and Development Ministry, the government registered 9 companies in the Bulgarian capital, which specialize in construction, consulting, organization of wholesale trade and distribution activities.

The tourism industry was named as one of the important areas, in which Turkmenistan is very interested in Bulgarian experience, since a number of popular European resorts in Europe, including sea-side ones, are located in Bulgarian territory, Altin Asir national TV channel reported.
