The Uzbek government has intensified national security in the run-up to Independence Day on Sept. 1. The measures will ensure that the celebrations are peaceful, Uzbek Deputy Interior Minister Mirkomil Mirfayziyev told journalists on Aug. 20.

"The Interior Ministry has developed and is implementing an action plan," he said.

The government launched nationwide anti-terror operations on July 25. More than 5,000 kilometers of roads were inspected, and meetings were held to inform the public about how to best safeguard their communities.

Mirfayziyev also noted that the government is currently searching the country for several individuals who are wanted for heinous crimes.

"Some 31 individuals are wanted for human trafficking, and 13 more are wanted for buying and selling stolen goods of state importance," Mirfayziyev said.
