Ashgabat hosted a meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on monitoring the implementation of Turkmenistan's international human rights commitments, the Turkmen government reported.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Majlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan, a number of ministries and departments, law enforcement agencies and public organizations.

The meeting agreed a package of proposals and recommendations arising from Turkmenistan's international commitments and the state's regulatory policy in various spheres of public life. The matter is the actions required to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other fundamental documents in this area.

Turkmenistan has prepared a draft National Program on Early Childhood Development and school children for the period 2011-2015 under the plan of cooperation between the Turkmen government and UNICEF.


At present, Turkmenistan is drafting a new Penal Code, which will take into account international standards. The development of this project is supported by the UN, the British Embassy in Turkmenistan and the project of the German Society for Technical Cooperation.
