Deputy Speaker: United States should continue development of democracy and human rights

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 17 / Trend, T. Hajiyev /

The United States needs to hold up its end in the field of democracy and human rights, Azerbaijani Parliamentary Deputy Speaker Bahar Muradova said, responding to statements made by the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas O. Melia.

"The process of democratization and protection of human rights around the world, including in the U.S. and Azerbaijan, has not yet been completed. It is a process that has no end. As long as society exists, as long as there is development, it is necessary to work toward developing these spheres," Muradova said.

The U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas O. Melia, who is on visit to Baku, told journalists on Thursday that the human rights situation in Azerbaijan could and should be improved.
