Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb.29 /Trend E.Ismayilov/

Constitutional Council of France took a fair position by repealing the law criminalizing denial of so called "Armenian genocide", Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilic said.

"France is the country of freedoms. Slogan of the French is the freedom and equality. If this law was passed, the interests of one social group would prevail over the interests of others. That is, the French Armenians have achieved what they wanted, but the Turks and Muslims, who live there, would have been deprived of freedom of speech" Kilic told Trend.

Kilic repeat that history should be dealt with by historians, not politicians.
"I hope that some countries, which have adopted similar laws in favor of the Armenians, will also repeal them. Because it is not only unfair and biased, but also further complicates the situation in the region" Kilic said.

Expressing his attitude to the instructions of President of France Nicolas Sarkozy to prepare a new draft law criminalizing the denial of so called "Armenian genocide", the ambassador noted that this decision is aimed against the whole of the Turkish people and does not serve to the interests of France. It is just a step towards the realization of personal interests of Sarkozy.

"I thank the President, Parliament and all political circles of Azerbaijan for sharp reaction to the law. It proves once again that we are one nation - two states," Kilic said.
The Constitutional Court of France repealed a law criminalizing denial of the so-called "Armenian genocide" on Tuesday.

The Council justified it by the fact that the law contradicts Article 33 of the Constitution of France and freedom of speech.

Following this decision, the French President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered the government to prepare a new bill criminalizing denial of the so-called "Armenian genocide".
On Jan 23, after an eight-hour debate, the Senate adopted the bill criminalizing denial of the so-called "Armenian genocide". Some 127 senators voted in favor, while 86 voted against.

The bill demands a year's imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euro for denying the so-called genocide.

Armenia and the Armenian lobby claim that the predecessor of the Turkey - Ottoman Empire had committed the 1915 genocide against the Armenians living in Anadolu, and achieved recognition of the "Armenian Genocide" by the parliaments of several countries.
