The Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-speaking countries (TurkPA) was granted observer status in the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), TurkPA told Trend.

The idea of creating such an organization was first announced by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev at the 47th session of UN General Assembly on October 5, 1992. The driving force of the initiative was the desire to create an effective and acceptable framework for peace and security in Asia.

Declaration on Principles Guiding Relations among the CICA Member States, adopted at the first meeting on September 14, 1999 in Almaty and the Almaty Act, CICA charter, adopted at the first summit on June 4, 2002, are the basic documents of the CICA. These two documents became key to the future evolution of the CICA.

Today, there are 24 member countries, which territory amounted to about 90 percent of the total area of the continent, and the population - 90 percent of Asian population. The eight countries and three international organizations, including the UN, have observer status in the organization.
