A free and fair election in November would be widely seen as a positive step in Azerbaijan's democratic progress, Robert Cekuta, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, said.

Cekuta made this statement at a meeting with Ali Ahmadov, the deputy chairman of the New Azerbaijan ruling party, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, the embassy's Twitter page said Aug. 26.

Along with the forthcoming parliamentary election, the political situation in the country was also discussed during the meeting, the statement says.

The sides exchanged views on the current state of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US, the party's website reported earlier. It was stressed that the common interests will continue making an important contribution to the development of bilateral relations.

The actions taken in connection with the preparation for the upcoming parliamentary election were discussed at the meeting.

Zia Sayed, the head of the political department of the embassy, ​​and Susan Chesley, the embassy counselor for political affairs, attended the meeting.
