Distortion of essence of negotiations on draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia is unacceptable - MFA

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 25. Distortion of the essence of the negotiations on the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia is unacceptable, Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Aykhan Hajizada said, commenting on the statements of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, that he made in an interview with the Egyptian Al-Kaira news agency, Trend reports citing Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

"Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in an interview distorted the essence of the negotiations on the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and made an attempt to mislead the international community, which is absolutely unacceptable.

These statements by Mirzoyan are yet another clear example of how Armenia manipulates the negotiations on a peace agreement and demonstrates a frivolous approach to the process.

Despite the format of negotiations on a peace treaty agreed between the parties and an agreement on the observance of certain rules, the Armenian side in December boycotted the next round of negotiations and disrupted the process. The Armenian side has not yet returned to negotiations on a peace treaty.

On the other hand, the Armenian side constantly interprets some of the elements it proposed to the draft peace agreement, taking them out of context and forming a false opinion among the public. This approach does not contribute positively to the process, but rather aims to hinder negotiations.

As for the claims of the Armenian Foreign Minister regarding the "international mechanism for the rights and security" of Armenian residents living in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan's position on this issue is known to Armenia. Efforts, contrary to the norms and principles of international law, to include a provision on this issue in the draft bilateral peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia demonstrate that Armenia has not yet abandoned its territorial claims against Azerbaijan, and such attempts are futile.

As the Azerbaijani side has repeatedly noted, the reintegration of people of Armenian origin living in the region will be ensured in accordance with the Constitution and legislative acts of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani side is determined to conduct a dialogue with the Armenian residents in this direction, and any external interference in this matter is unacceptable. We put forward a proposal to hold the next meeting in Baku on the reintegration of Armenian residents, and Armenia should not interfere with Azerbaijan's activities in this direction.

Once again we call on the Armenian side to return to the negotiations on a peace treaty and carry out serious work in this direction. Azerbaijan is ready to immediately take part in the negotiations on a peace agreement," Hajizada said.
