Buildings Near Collapsed 16-Storey Building in Baku do not Meet Standards

I.Alizadeh / The buildings constructed near the collapsed sixteen-storey building in one of the central streets of Baku City do not meet standards, Abid Sharif, the Vice-Premier, said during a press conference held by the special operative staff of the State Commission investigating reasons for the building's collapse.

A building which was under construction by the Mutaffakir company collapsed on 28 August at 17:00. The President of the company, Ali Muradov, who is responsible for the building's construction and other senior company officials have been arrested. The death toll has reached sixteen.

The inspection revealed that the quality of materials used during construction of the collapsed building was worse than fixed standards. The State Commission will announce its final results after a week. One of the nearby-situated buildings was damaged as a result of collapse.

The Vice-Premier denied the information about Mutaffakir building illegally and not officially receiving a permit for construction. The company has all the necessary documents for construction. The company is accountable for all defects during construction. The inspections are being held and all necessary documents will be submitted to the Prosecutor General's Office, Sharifov said.

The Chairman of the Commission noted that heavy machinery will be used to clear the debris of the collapsed building from the area.
