Azerbaijani MPs to Appeal to Prosecutor General’s Office to Release Arrested Journalist

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The MPs from Azerbaijani opposition will appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan in order to release the arrested editor-in-chief of the Azadlig newspaper, Ganimat Zahid. The decision was made during the meeting of human rights activists and chairmen of opposition parties dedicated to protection of the rights of Zahid on 12 November.

On the evening of 11 November, Zahid was called to Yasamal District Court in Baku and was detained as a suspect. He faced hooliganism and assault charges. Zahid is currently being held in a preliminary detention cell. On 12 November, Yasamal District Court sentenced him to a two month prison term.

MP Panah Huseyn said that an appeal to the Public Prosecutor General, Zakir Garallov has already been developed. An appeal will also be submitted to representatives of Azerbaijani intelligentsia and international organizations.

During the meeting the participants collected necessary funds to hold measures to protect Zahid's rights. A Task Group was formed in order to implement the aforesaid measures.
