Cancellation of Legionary Footballers’ Limit in Azerbaijan Contradicts FIFA and UEFA Requirements: Former Secretary General

Azerbaijan, Baku, 26 September / Trend corr. R.Ergun / Fuad Asadov, the Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Football Federations Association (AFFA), believes that cancellation of limit on legionary footballers in the Premier League contradicts FIFA and UEFA requirements.

"At present, both FIFA and UEFA seek to reduce legionary limit in all countries. However, Azerbaijan experiences the wrong way round. I believe that it is incorrect step to cancel limit on legionaries in the Azerbaijani Premier League, the ex-secretary general told Trend on 26 September.

Asadov was the Secretary General of the AFFA during the presidency period of Fuad Musayev and Ramiz Mirzayev. Elkhan Mammadov replaced Asadov when he resigned because of his health condition.

The ex-secretary general said that he was against to increase legionary limit, when he worked for the AFFA.

"Currently, legionary limit is being reduced in most of the European countries. We also should do so. I was against to increase the limit, when I worked at the AFFA, as well. If only legionary footballers participate in the championship, then where will local footballers participate?" Asadov said.

Under the rule adopted at the beginning of 2008, clubs participating in the Azerbaijani Premier League are allowed to use legionary footballers until they themselves want to quit.

At present legionary footballers participate in the Azerbaijani National team, as well. So far, the Brazilian footballers, including Ernani Pereyra, Andre Ladaga, Marcus Fereyra, Leandro Gomesh and Fabio Luis Ramim, were amongst the legionaries involved to the national team.
