The Azerbaijani parliament is expected to pass the Bill on Reproductive Health in the spring session, Parliamentary Commission on Socio-Political Issues member Malahat Hasanova told reporters on Feb. 17.

"The commission has reviewed the bill. I am sure it will be adopted in the first reading in the spring session," said Hasanova.

The bill was admitted to discussion in the first reading, but the voting did not take place.

While discussing the bill, the members of parliament divided into two fronts. Those opposing the bill said the provisions on in vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood and donating reproductive cells are unnecessary. Proponents of the bill believe that the legislation will prevent divorces and infertility.

The bill was returned to the commission for revision and comments were taken into consideration, Hasanova said.

Reproductive health is a concept including pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum depression and treating diseases of reproductive organs.

Special attention is paid to reproductive health in Azerbaijan.

Maternal reproductive health is a matter of top importance as maternal mortality is a significant problem in the country, Hasanova said.

From a scientific point of view, modern family planning serves to protect reproductive health and reduce diseases and abortions.
