Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 19 / Trend , K.Zarbaliyeva/

Azerbaijani Justice Ministry Investigation Department investigated 204 criminal cases in 2008, Justice Deputy Minister Vilayat Zahirov told Trend on Feb. 19.

The figure has tripled from 2003. During preliminary investigation of criminal cases 73 percent or 600,000 manat of damage was reimbursed, he said.

Justice Ministry launched investigative activities in 2001. At first the office investigated several crimes against justice. From the end of 2007 the office undertook investigating crimes related to trafficking of prohibited items in sentence serving institutions and investigation cells.

According to Zahirov, the Department intensified its activities after Constitutional Court's Feb. 15 2008 comments to resolve a collision between the Civil Procedural Code and the Law on Fulfillment of Court Decisions. Investigation personnel have been established at a number of regional justice offices in order to improve efficiency of investigations.

Justice Ministry Investigation Department for the first time used the experience of creating an alternative electronic version of the investigated cases, Zahirov said.

"During preliminary and trial investigations this innovation creates an opportunity to familiarize participants with the case, saves time, ensures transparency and fairness, eliminates falsification and elimination of facts of a case and has other advantages," he said.
