An Azerbaijani court has launched a trial on members of the Forest Brothers armed gang who are accused of terrorism and formation of the armed groups.

Defendants and their lawyers solicited at the trial, which took place at the Serious Crime Court on July 6.

Defendant Teymur Narimanov presented petition for refusal from a lawyer.

Judges presiding over the trial rejected the petition basing on the fact that Narimanova suffered from mental illness during the investigation.

Although accused Khalid Valimatov filed a petition for return of money which he had given a lawyer during the preliminary investigation, Zabit Shihbalaev's lawyer Elman Osmanov filed a petition to annul the Articles 228.3 and 234.5 in the defendant's criminal case, as well as drawing additional witnesses and returning 1,200 rubles, which were withdrawn from Musa Orudjov during the arrest, the court rejected them.

The process will continue during the second half of the day by announcing the verdict.

A 26-member gang is charged of the Articles 279 (forming armed groups not provided in the legislation), 214 (terrorism), 120 (willful homicide), 228 (illegal possession of weapons), illegal crossing of state border, 315 (resistance or use of violence against representative of government) and 320 (forgery, manufacture or sale of official documents, state awards, seals, stamps, forms, or use of falsified documents) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

In 2007, the Azerbaijani National Security Ministry rendered harmless 17 members of the armed group of Abu Jafar, including one of its leaders - Naif Abdulkerim Al-Bedevi. As a result of complex operational search activities, the ministry has revealed involvement of Ilgar Mollachiyev with Abdul Majid nickname, his brother-in-law Samir Mehdiyev with Suleyman nickname, as well as other members of a radical religious organization to the explosion on Aug. 17, 2008 in the Abu Bakr Mosque.

After the arrest of the Sumgayit group members, Mollachiyev and Mehdiyev decided to form a new group, which planned to send to implement terrorist attacks to undermine the social and political stability in Azerbaijan.

As a result of operational activities, the ministry detained 13 members of the group.

Under the plan, the Jamahat Sumgayit group should commit fraud and theft in Baku in order to obtain additional funds and thus strengthen their logistical capabilities, and members of the Jamahat of Guba and Gusar second group should create a military camp in the forest and mountains of the country.
