As of Jan.1, 2010, about 28 religious communities registered in the Azerbaijani regions bordered Iran, State Committee for Working with Religious Associations Department Head for the southern region Miryahya Badirov told Trend .

About 120 communities have already passed re-registration in the country. The committee considers the documents of about 400 religious communities.

During the spring session of Parliament, amendments were made to the Law on freedom of religion.

According to the additions, Article 18 of the Azerbaijani Constitution bans the spread and propaganda of religions humiliating human dignity or contradicting principles of humanity. All religious communities can act only after they have been registered with the relevant bodies of the executive power and included in the state register of religious organizations.

About 145 communities operating in the Southern region (Bilasuvar, Jalilabad, Masalli, Lankaran, Astara, Lerik and Yardimli) have transferred documents for a certificate to the committee, he added.
Presently, the committee considers the appeals of 177 communities.

According to him, 300 mosques of the region operate on a continuous basis and 180 - periodically. Prior to the additions and changes to the Law on freedom of religion the region registered 75 religious communities.

The committee will take actions in accordance with the law towards the religious structures that did not apply for registration, he said.
