Committee: 425 religious communities registered in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has issued certificates to 425 religious communities after passing registration, State Committee for Working with Religious Associations Chairman Hidayat Orujov told journalists today.
Roughly 534 religious communities have passed registration, Orujov said. All other religious communities have operated without the appropriate registration.
The committee has received registration applications from about 782 religious entities, including 748 Islamic and 34 non-Islamic communities. A total of 425 have already passed registration - 408 are Islamic and 17 are non-Islamic, including nine Christian, six Jewish, one Hare Krishna and one Baha'i, Orujov said.
Parliament, approved amendments to the law on freedom of religion in the spring session.
According to the legislation, the dissemination of religious propaganda that humiliates human dignity is banned. Religious communities may function only after receiving registration.
The committee has denied registration to 11 religious communities, Orujov said.
About 30 religious communities received certificates today.
