Regional schools in Azerbaijan are suffering from a shortage of teaching staff, Education Minister Misir Mardanov told journalists on Thursday as he announced measures to address the problem.

Regional schools in Azerbaijan are suffering from a shortage of teaching staff, Education Minister Misir Mardanov told journalists on Thursday as he announced measures to address the problem.

"We are continuing with a program aimed at addressing the shortage of teachers in the regions, and in 2010, we have sent 800 teachers to work in the country's regions," Mardanov said.

The Azerbaijani government approved the state program to address the shortage of teachers in the country's regions.

About seven years ago, the country's secondary schools had almost 7,000 vacant teacher places but 80 percen of these positions have now been filled.

Mardanov said the need for teachers particularly felt in Lerik, Yardimli, Gedabek and other highland regions.
