A blood drive was held upon the initiative of the chairman of the Azerbaijani Republican Children's Organization, Guler Ahmadova MP, to support the project of Azerbaijani First Lady and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador,  Mehriban Aliyeva MP, aimed at helping children suffering from thalassemia.

The blood drive was held in the Scientific-Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion today.

The country collected 19.57 tons of reserve blood during a campaign held in 2009, which was supported by about 50,000 volunteers, the chief consultant of the Health Ministry's medical assistance department Dadash Humbatov said.

"Today, there are a lot of children needing blood in Azerbaijan. Children suffering from thalassemia and hemophilia, need blood like it is air and water. These patients should have a transfusion twice a month. Such blood drives are held in different regions of Azerbaijan on the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. We also decided to make a contribution to this," Humbatov, who participated in the campaign, said.

Eighty-nine people donated 27 liters of blood (250-400 grams from each volunteer) at today's event.
