The amount of funds allocated from the budget for education and teachers' salaries in Italy, Lithuania and other EU countries, is several times higher than in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani Minister of Education Misir Mardanov told media today.

The minister said that the purpose of his recent visit to Italy and Lithuania was to become familiar with the education systems of these countries and the reforms carried out there, the expansion of ties and the use of these achievements in the field of education in Azerbaijan.

"The funds allocated from the budget for education and teachers' salaries in the EU and particularly in Lithuania and Italy are much higher and are not comparable with those in Azerbaijan," Mardanov said.

At present, the country's high schools need more than 3000 teachers. About 90 per cent of vacancies fall to the regions. In Baku, the figure is very low, Mardanov added.

The minister said that documents are being received in connection with the recruitment of teachers for the next school year.
