A concert was held in Azerbaijan's Ganja city during the opening ceremony of the 'Ganja European Youth Capital 2016' project.

Ganja residents enjoyed live shows by local and foreign performers during the event.

The world-famous singers Ingrid and Alexandra Stan, People's Artist of Azerbaijan Alim Gasimov, the "Natig" rhythm band, and Azerbaijani singer Abbas Baghirov took part in the concert.

The Italian singer Ingrid performed the Azerbaijani folk song "Sari Gelin".

The concert ended with the "Running Scared" song, performed by the Azerbaijani winners of the Eurovision 2011 song contest Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal, followed by fireworks.

The opening ceremony of the 'Ganja European Youth Capital 2016' project was held in Ganja on May 4.

The European Youth Capital project was for the first time presented by the European Youth Forum in 2009.

The project is aimed at developing international cooperation of local and foreign youth organizations, exchange experience between the national councils of youth organizations of the countries, the cities of which are awarded the 'European Youth Capital' title.

Rotterdam (the Netherlands) was the first-ever European Youth Capital. Since then, Turin (Italy), Antwerp (Belgium), Braga (Portugal), Maribor (Slovenia), Thessaloniki (Greece), and Cluj-Napoca (Romania) have been awarded this title.

Ganja is the eighth city to be named the European Youth Capital.

The decision to award Ganja the 'European Youth Capital 2016' title was announced in the Greek city of Thessaloniki on Apr. 10, 2013.
