Human Trafficking Cases Registered in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S. Aghayeva / Imran Najafov, the Deputy Chairman of the Office for Fight against Human Trafficking of the Interior Ministry of Azerbaijan said during the round table on "Fight against Human Trafficking and Violence: Problems and Prospects" held in the Azerbaijani Ombudsman Office that in 2006 the Ministry registered 211 cases of human trafficking in Azerbaijan..

193 cases were disclosed with 207 persons who were instituted to criminal responsibility.

According to the statistics provided by the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry, 86 persons became the victims of human trafficking, with 77 victims of sexual exploitation.

In 2007, 61 cases of human trafficking were registered in Azerbaijan, while 57 persons were detained.

Most of the victims were deceitfully trafficked to such countries as Russia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, India and other countries. The Deputy Chairman noted that as a result of the measures taken by the Ministry with regards to the human trafficking, Azerbaijan has transferred from the control group to the second group of the countries where the situation is considered to be satisfactory.
