Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice Applies to Ministry of Justice of Hungary

Zarbaliyeva / The Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice has applied to the Hungarian Justice Ministry to extradite Ramil Safarov, an officer of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, to Azerbaijan. Safarov was sentenced to life imprisonment by Budapest City Court. The appeal has not been replied to as of yet. Azerbaijan and Hungary do not have any bilateral agreements on mutual juridical assistance. However, both countries have joined the European Convention on extradition of inmates to their countries for serving imprisonment. The extradition of Safarov to Azerbaijan can be implemented on the basis of this convention.

Ikram Shirinov, the representative of Safarov's family in court, have noted that a final decision on this case will be made at the end of May. Shirinov has added that he had received the judgments of the court, became familiar with them and is now developing a draft appeal.

Safarov, who killed Armenian officer, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Budapest City Court on 13 April, 2006. The Court of Appeal kept the sentence in force.

On 17 November, 2006 the Budapest City Court sentenced Safarov to an 8-year suspended imprisonment due to the incident that had taken place between him and the supervisors of the investigation cell where he was held.
