Azerbaijan Ex-Health Minister Want to Participate in Court Trial on Lawsuit Against Azerbaijani Justice Minister and Penal Service’s Chief

I.Alizadeh / The Azerbaijani ex-Health Minister, Ali Insanov, wants to participate in the court trial of the lawsuit against the Azerbaijani Justice Minister and the Penal Service's chief. Insanov's lawyer, Agaveys Shahverdi submitted a petition to attend court during the process held in Nasimi District Court.

A decision as to whether Insanov will participate in court will be made at a hearing on 29 August. Agamammad Mammadov, the deputy chief of the Investigation Isolation Cell 1, will represent the Investigation Cell, and Etibar Garayev, the chief of the sanitary unit of the Investigation Cell, will represent the Justice Ministry.

Insanov said that he was subjected to torture by the Justice Minister and Penal Service's chief due to sharp statements made by Insanov against Jamil Aliyev, a close relative of the Justice minister.

The former minister was arrested in October 2005 for attempting a coup d'etat, appropriation and embezzlement of state property, exceeding his commission and responsibilities, and other serious crimes and was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment and confiscation of his property. Ali Insanov is currently being detained at the Bail Investigation cell. The ex-minister is demanding to be transferred to the medical institution of the Penal Service due to a hernia on his spine.

The court trial including Insanov's appeal will continue at Baku Appeal Court on 30 August Presided by judge Gail Mammadov.
