The Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has developed a business plan and a project for obtaining a new type of green fertilizers (green manure) from the green mass generated as waste in greenhouses, Director of the institute Alovsat Guliyev told Trend.

“In Azerbaijan, particularly in the suburbs of Baku, greenhouses occupy an area of about 2,500 hectares. Tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and other cultivations are grown in these greenhouses,” Guliyev said.

“At the end of the fruiting period of these plants, their stems are removed and emitted as waste. From such a number of greenhouses, 200,000-250,000 tons of green mass are produced annually. Having collected this mass, slightly softening it with the help of bacteria, and getting rid of harmful bacteria, fertilizers can be got from it and used on the farm,” noted the director.

“Unlike mineral fertilizers, green fertilizers are more saturated with biological, organic substances. By adding minerals, they can be used in agriculture,” he said.

“The abuse of mineral fertilizers harms the natural microflora of the soil. However, the green manures do not harm it in any way. The preparation of this fertilizer can considerably solve the problem of environmental waste. On the other hand, its use in agriculture will less costly for the farmer," added Guliyev.
