Anaklia deep sea port to play decisive role in Georgia’s investment strategy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 15

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The deep sea port of Anaklia is a strategic project of Georgia, said Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava, Trend reports via Georgian media.

According to her, in the post-crisis period, the port will play a decisive role in Georgia’s investment strategy.

“We have already stated that in the post-crisis period, our investment strategy will mainly be based on attracting as many direct foreign investments as possible," said Turnava.

According to her, in this regard, the attractiveness of Georgia, along with many other factors, is due to the fact that it is a country with the good geopolitical position, and it has access to the Black Sea. And one of Georgia's competitive advantages is a developed port infrastructure.

“Thus, in the period after the end of the coronavirus pandemic, the role of both the Poti port and Anaklia port will increase even more. And this applies to any port infrastructure,” the minister said.

Natia Turnava ruled out the possibility that the Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) will return to the implementation of the Anaklia port project.

The minister made this comment after the Anaklia Development Consortium expressed its readiness to attract additional investments in cooperation with the Georgian government and to continue work on the Anaklia port project.

Meanwhile, the Georgian government officially terminated the agreement on the construction of the Anaklia port with the Anaklia Development Consortium on January 9, 2020 and began to search for a new investor.

The construction of the deep sea port of Anaklia began in December 2017.
