Next Stage of Bridges, Pedestrian Subways Construction in Baku May Start in 2009

Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 May / Trend corr. S. Aliyev/ The second stage of the program on improvement of the transport infrastructure of Baku may be commenced in 2009, Azerbaijani Transport Ministry reported. The first stage is expected to be completed this year.

The first stage will be completed in September 2008. By that time bridges and road junctions nearby Meshadi Azizbayov subway station, at the intersection of the Babak and Mahammad Hadi streets (nearby Khalglar Dostlugu subway station) and nearby Excelsior Hotel will be operational.

The construction is being implemented within the framework of the project on discharging of Baku transport system in accordance with Azerbaijani President's decree 'On Improvement of Transport System in Baku in 2006- 2007'.

The program on construction of bridges, pedestrian subways, tunnels and subway parking will be continued in 2008. Presently, the government is considering it. The program envisages construction of 14 new bridges and road junctions, 7 multi-storey parking, 30 pedestrian crossings and 96km of roads.
