Azerbaijan leads in growth rate of economy amongst CIS countries in 2008

In 2008 the maximum GDP growth rate amongst the CIS countries was observed in Azerbaijan, where the GDP rate increased by 10.8 percent, the CIS Statistic Committee reported.

Belarus ranks second with 10 percent of GDP rate in 2008 followed by Tajikistan - by 7.9 percent of growth, Kyrgyzstan - by 7.6 percent, Armenia- by 6.8 percent and Russia - by 5.6 percent. The lowest GDP rate was observed in Ukraine - by 2.1 percent.

The GDP amongst the CIS countries increased in average by 5 percent, compared to by 8.5 percent in 2007.

In 2008 cargo transportation increased by two percent compared to by three percent in 2007 and retail goods turnover - by 14 percent (by 17 percent). Growth of these figures made up 6 and 16.1 percent in Azerbaijan, respectively.

Growth of investments in the CIS's main capital amounted to 10 percent (by 21 percent) and 34.3 percent in Azerbaijan.

Amount of foreign trade turnover increased in all CIS countries compared to 2007.

However, slowdown of its growth was conditioned by price factor. Thus, in the second half of 2008, world prices for fuel and energy resources dramatically dropped which influenced on slowdown growth rate of export and import operations.

"The CIS's consumer market maintained stability and developed with high enough rates, but it took place through import operations," the committee said.
