Iran to mobilize potential of Enzali port

Iran will work to develop its Enzeli port before the completion of the construction of a new international sea port in the Alat settlement (Azerbaijan), Head of the Iranian Presidential Apparatus' department for control over economic issues and Assistant to Iranian Vice-President Aliaga Mohammadi said at the news conference in Baku today.

This work will be undertaken with a view to use the potential that will appear after the construction of the new port in Azerbaijan, Mohammadi said.

The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry reported on Thursday that the construction of the new port will soon be launched.

Construction of a new international sea port in the settlement of Alat will be implemented in three phases and completed by 2015. The first phase of the project involves the construction of two ferries, three cargo berths for receiving containers, ro-ro and conventional (universal) bulk carriers. The second phase of the project includes the construction of three additional cargo berths, the third - the construction of an additional two cargo berths. The project is estimated at more than $400 million.

The port can accept up to 11.6 million tons of cargo.

Now a total of six international trading ports - Baku (Azerbaijan), Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), Aktau (Kazakhstan), Astrakhan (Russia), Enzali and Neka (Iran) operate in the Caspian Sea.
