Azerbaijan to commission new airport in Gabala

By 2013, Azerbaijan Airlines plans to complete construction of a state-of-the-art air terminal at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, State Civil Aviation Administration Director Arif Mammadov said at an event on the Civil Aviation Day.

By 2013, Azerbaijan Airlines plans to complete construction of a state-of-the-art air terminal at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, State Civil Aviation Administration Director Arif Mammadov said at an event on the Civil Aviation Day.
He said holding major international events in Azerbaijan, one of which will be the "Eurovision-2012" song contest, makes it necessary to construct such a modern infrastructure that meets the leading world standards.
Mammadov also said that at present, work continues on construction of a new airport in Gabala.
"Despite heavy rainfall observed this year, the airport in Gabala is planned to be commissioned at fixed time - that is, by late 2011," Mammadov said.
After completing construction of the new air terminal at the Baku International Airport in 2013, the existing complex will be reoriented to receiving domestic flights.
The new airport will serve three million passengers. The area of the air terminal is 58,000 square meters. A four-story building of the new air terminal will be built in the shape of a triangle.
Some 18 escalators and 20 passenger elevators will be installed in the building of the new air terminal. The latest technological advances used in international aviation will be applied here. Passenger services will be organized at the highest international standards at the new terminal. Use of the most advanced equipment will create all possibilities to ensure security. The new complex will be able to accept eight aircrafts simultaneously.
The length of the runway at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport will be 4,000 meters, width - 75 meters.
