Iran Expects $4.5bln Income from Agricultural Exports

Iranian Deputy Minister of Agricultural Jihad Majid Khoshnoud said the country expects to earn a total $4.5bln through export of agricultural products during the current Iranian year (started on March 21), reported Fars News Agency.

Iran exported 3.8 billion dollars worth of agricultural products in the last Iranian year compared with 3.2 billion dollars the previous year, Khoshnoud said on Monday.

"We forecast that the amount would reach 4.5 billion dollars this year," the official added.

In November, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced plans to boost the country's annual production of agricultural goods to over 200 million tons in four years.

He said some imported agricultural products have become key components of the country's national security, but expressed concerns that such products are being used as a pressure tool by hegemonic powers in order to impose their demands on other nations.
