The volume of fertilizers imported into Azerbaijan does not cover even 10 percent of demand, Agriculture Minister Ismat Abasov said the day before.

"The state leasing company Aqrolizinq imports fertilizers into Azerbaijan and sells them to farmers on preferential terms, but the volume of fertilizer exported to Azerbaijan does not cover even 10 percent of demand," Abasov said.

He said Azerbaijani farmers and entrepreneurs should be more active in import of fertilizers into the country.

"Using these fertilizers can significantly increase production," Abasov said.

Last year Aqrolizinq signed contracts to deliver 43,510 tons of mineral fertilizers worth 12 million manat to the country. In 2010, Aqrolizinq has provided the country's agriculture in the following range of fertilizers - 40,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, 2,000 tons of nitroammophos, a thousand tons of ammophos, 512 tons of potash fertilizers and 7,400 kilograms of pesticides.

Azerbaijan agrarian sector's need in fertilizer is 600,000-800,000 tons per year.

The official exchange rate is 0.7878 manat to $1 on June 18.
