Uzbekistan ups cotton fiber production in January-September

In January - September 2012, Uzbekistan increased production of cotton fiber by 2.6 percent up to 698.744 tons compared to the same period of 2011, Uzbek State Statistics Committee said on Thursday.

During the same period production of cotton yarn increased by 14.6 percent to 103.962 tons, cotton textiles - by 4.6 percent to 40.327 million square meters.

As it was reported, production of cotton fiber in Uzbekistan decreased by 1.4 percent to 1.099 million tons, cotton yarn production - by 34.1 percent to 122,400 tons in 2011 compared to the same period of 2010. Output of cotton textiles decreased by 37.8 percent and hit 54.726 million square meters.

Uzbekistan ranks sixth in the world for production and third for exporting cotton fiber. Every year the country produces about 3.5 million tons of raw cotton and 1.0 - 1.2 million tons of cotton fiber.

Selected varieties of medium fiber cotton with a fiber length of 32-33 mm make up 95 percent of the cotton planted in the country, long-fiber varieties with a fiber length of 36-39 mm - 5 percent
