Turkmenistan and Tajikistan can open transport corridor through Afghanistan

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had a telephone conversation with his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon noted that he with interest will take the initiative of the Tajik side for laying and connecting the railways of the two countries on the territory of Afghanistan, Turkmen government reported.

"The implementation of this project will contribute to the diversification of transport corridors of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, implementation of possibilities of cooperation in the field of transport, including in the context of initiatives of Turkmenistan for developing interregional relations, using the potential of the transport and communication network of the Central Asia, the Caspian and Black Sea regions," - said in report.

Turkmen leader expressed confidence that the project will be another effective step to restore the social and economic infrastructure of the brotherly Afghanistan, sustained growth of its economy.

The sides discussed the priority issues of the Turkmen-Tajik cooperation, noting that there is a good opportunity for the intensification of trade, activization of cooperation in energy and transport and communications, taking into account the geographical location and the transit potential of the two countries, said in report.

The presidents exchanged views on topical issues of regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Tajikistan is experiencing a shortage of energy resources, the largest supplier of which in Central Asia is Turkmenistan. Official Dushanbe expects to have access to the energy resources of Turkmenistan, including fossil fuels and wants to increase the supply of petroleum products into the country.
