Russia begins to restore road to Georgia through Dagestan

Russia has begun restoration work on the Dagestani section of the Russian-Georgian road, which was closed in 1992. Information about it was confirmed by the Ministry of Transport of Dagestan to the First Channel of the Georgian Public Broadcaster.

According to the head of the Ministry's press service, Andrey Bondarev, the decision on the rehabilitation of the road has been taken, and now an economic evaluation is being carried out.

Bondarev is almost sure that construction will start soon and in the first phase the road will be restored to the Georgian border. He has no information on whether border checkpoint is to be placed on the road.

The Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, David Narmania does not have any official information about the restoration of the road. According to him, in the event of such an initiative, from Georgia the question must be discussed by a special commission.

"There are some criteria that are important for decision making: how intensive the movement is, who is an initiator, what is the cost and duration of the project. According to classification and purpose the road is municipal, and the question should be put by the municipality," Narmania said.

According to the broadcaster, the town of Kvareli also does not have information on the rehabilitation of the road.
