Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Dec. 18

Enhancing land and maritime border management security capabilities of future border guards was the aim of a series of training lectures organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat for 130 cadets at the Navy Institute of Turkmenistan's Defence Ministry, which conclude today in Turkmenbashi, the OSCE said.
Jon Trumble, a retired Coast Guard officer and international expert from the United States, presented the concepts of boundaries, borders and borderlands and related contemporary challenges.
The five-day lecture course also addressed the illicit movement of goods across the world, vessel inspections, maritime surveillance and patrols.
"The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat organized this course as part of its ongoing support to the Government of Turkmenistan in strengthening the capacity of its border personnel in different areas of border management," said Richard Wheeler, Political Officer of the OSCE
Centre in Ashgabat.
"We are pleased to co-operate with educational institutions, which prepare professional border guards and it is our belief that such training courses will contribute to advancing the training of border guards in line with international standards," he said.
The cadets discussed the specifics of leadership in the maritime domain as well as the importance of the law of the sea and the international ship and port security code.
"Maritime borders are complex, with numerous agencies involved in an effective and balanced security and trade environment that serves national requirements," Trumble said.
