Southern and northern provinces of Iran have a huge potential for development of their shrimp farming because of the favorable conditions of farming there.

“Based on a major development plan, Iran’s seafood products will rise by threefold in the next 7 years, reaching 2 million tons annually,” Abbas Qobadi, a senior official with Tehran’s international exhibition of fishery and related industries, said, Tasnim news agency reported on October 5.

Iran’s southern and northern provinces have 180,000 hectares of areas that have favorable conditions for shrimp farming, he further said.

The areas’ weather could allow enterprises to maintain regular operations there and the provinces have the potential to produce 400,000 tons of shrimp annually, he added.

Shrimp culture in Iran is mainly undertaken in the provinces of Khuzestan, Hormozgan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Bushehr and Golestan.

Currently, 4,300 and 3,670 hectares of land are under shrimp farming in the province of Bushehr and Golestan, respectively, according to the official.
