Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct. 11

By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey can import meat from Russia only upon condition of compliance of that meat with halal standards, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey told Trend Oct. 11.

The ministry noted that it is necessary to take into account the fact that halal standards are important for Turkey, since the population of the country professes Islam.

The ministry also noted that if Russia turns to Turkey for permission to import meat, then they will have to take into account these requirements of Turkey.

Earlier the Minister of Agriculture of Russia, Alexander Tkachev, said in an interview with TASS: "We expect Turkey to make a decision in the near future on admission of Russian meat and dairy and fish products to its market."

Tkachev added that the Russian agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor is constantly in contact with Turkish colleagues on this issue and expressed hope that soon the Russian products will enter the Turkish market and will be "appreciated by consumers".

According to the data from Turkey's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, presently, Turkey imports animals from such countries as Austria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania.
