Machine woven carpets account for half of Iran’s textile industry exports, said a member of Iran Textile Specialists Association.

"Iran's general annual textile exports reaches $700 million. while the exports of machine woven carpets amount to more than $350 million," Alireza Haeri said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"The country has produced 90 million square meters of machine woven carpets last Iranian year (started on March 21, 2018), while around 60 million square meters were consumed domestically," he said.

"If we find good market for exporting the product, the county has the capacity to increase the annual production to 120 million square meters of machine woven carpets," he added.

"Iran's capacity to exports machine woven carpet is $1.5 million per year; however, this target requires liquidity and necessary raw material for producers. The government can provide soft loans and other advances and trade incentives to support the export," he said.

Haeri noted that Iran is surrounded by 15 neighbor countries with more than 600 million population in total. "Iran shares only 2 percent of their imports, while 60 percent of Iran's machine woven carpets is being exported to these countries."

"Considering the trade communications with these countries and implementation of bilateral tariffs, the export of the machine woven carpets can be increased, if import tariffs are reduced," he added.

The statistics of textile industry during past 10 months of last Iranian year (started on March 21, 2018) show that 260,000 tons of its products worth $955 million were exported and around 339,000 tons of textile and cloths were imported.
