The EU aims at close cooperation with Turkmenistan, reads a letter by European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Trend reports Aug. 30.

In her letter, she also expressed hope to contribute to closer cooperation between the EU and Turkmenistan.

The letter notes that the international relations are influenced by many global challenges, which countries face more than ever in modern history.

She added that during her term of office, she would like Europe to strive to strengthen the concept of responsible attitude to these global processes.

Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world in terms of natural gas reserves, and the Galkynysh field in the east of the country is the second biggest field, after South Pars in Iran.

Turkmenistan has long been exploring the possibility of bringing its energy carriers to the European market. The Trans-Caspian project may be implemented as part of the Southern Gas Corridor project, which is being lobbied by the EU.
