In the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2019), Iran's Gilan province is expected to export 70,000 tons of kiwi fruits, Deputy Director of Gilan Agricultural Jihad Organization Masoud Almasi said, Trend reports via IRNA.
According to forecasts, Gilan is expected to produce over 180,000 tons of kiwi fruits, Almasi said.
In 2017, 60,000 tons of kiwi fruits were harvested in Gilan, though this figure was only 37,000 in 2013, he noted.
In the last Iranian year (March 21, 2018-March 21, 2019), Gilan exported 67,500 tons of kiwi fruits for $47 million, he added.
In Iran, kiwi fruit is cultivated only in Gilan, Mazandaran provinces and a small portion in Golestan province, Almasi said, adding that the total are of Iran's kiwi orchards is 12,152 hectares, 5,746 hectares of which account for Gilan.
Some 2,800 hectares of Gilan's kiwi orchards are in the province's Talesh county. By the area of kiwi orchards, Talesh is followed by Rudsar and Astara counties. Kiwi fruit cultivation employs 11,500 people in Gilan.
