Volume of potato harvesting in Kazakhstan’s Pavlodar region in 2019 will exceed 552,000 tons, whereas harvesting of other vegetables will be 209,000 tons, region’s Deputy Governor Almas Batanov told Trend.

Pavlodar region is the largest potatoes produces in the country, some 9.63 percent of the total potato production volume accounts for this region.

“The region’s supply of potatoes exceeds region’s demand by seven times (based on the annual norm of 100 kilograms of potatoes per person), which in turn creates the opportunity for potatoes processing,” Batanov noted.

In this regard the project for manufacturing of potato starch via modern non-waste technology is being implemented in the region.

“In addition to starch, protein, fiber and fertilizer will be manufactured at the plant. The goods will be sold both in Kazakhstan and exported to China, Russia and other countries,” the official said.

Furthermore, according to Batanov, the region has a great potential for sugar producing.

“Thus, this year the sample planting of sugar beet was implemented in the region. Taking into consideration climate conditions of the region some 50 tons per hectare can be grown here. Another positive quality is increased sugar content, which is very important for sugar production,” the official reminded.

Sugar beet used for sugar manufacturing in Southern region of the country has the sugar content of 14 percent, whereas sugar content of Pavlodar region’s sugar beet is expected to be 18-20 percent.

“Sample sugar beet harvests were tested. As a result the test, average sugar content of the beet harvested in the region amounted to 13.9-19.3 percent,” Batanov said.

Furthermore, a sugar manufacturing plant is being built in the region.

According to the official, timeframe of project’s implementation is 2020-2022. Total cost of the project is expected to be $134 million, whereas annual plant capacity will be 110,000 tons of product a year. Some 370 new jobs will be created.

“These measures will allow to increase the food products manufacturing by 28 percent by 2022, as well as expand list of goods and export direction, via manufacturing of competitive goods,” Batanov concluded.
