The Iran's saffron export amounted to more than $2.1 billion in 15 years from 2004-2019, Director General of the Coordination Department for the Development of Agricultural Products of the Iran Trade Promotion Organization Mahmoud Bazari said, Trend reports referring to the organization’s website.
According to Bazari, Iranian saffron is exported to more than 70 countries.
Bazari added that currently, saffron is grown on about 118,000 hectares in Iran.
The director general said that more than 400 tons of saffron are harvested annually in Iran.
The official said that the saffron infrastructure has been created with private sector investments over the past years, but additional support could give a big boost to saffron export.
"Over the past 15 years, allocating at least 5 percent of annual saffron export revenues to this sector could have increased the quantity and quality of saffron and give it a special place in Iran's exports," he said.
Iran exported about 7.1 million tons of agricultural and food products worth $5.82 billion in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020).
