TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 20
Trend:
Iran Ministry of Defense inaugurated launching production of the national turbojet engine.
During the inauguration ceremony on Aug. 20, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani praised the efforts made to build the national turbojet engine, Trend reports citing IRNA.
"The original design of the engine was unveiled in 2016, and today, the production line of the engine is launched,” said the head of state.
"Usually, when countries announce that they manufacture aircraft, they do not mean the engine, but the wings and the body, as they buy the engine from elsewhere,” he said. "We are happy to announce that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in building a whole fighter including the wings, the body and the engine."
Managing director of Iran's Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO), General Afshin Khajefard said that Owj (Zenith) national engine is the first domestically produced turbojet engine to equip the country's fighters, including Kowsar, Saegheh, Azarakhsh and Yasin advanced training jets, with a take-off weight range of about ten tons.
He added that the Owj engine control system is of hydro mechanical type, which can be upgraded to the level of full authority digital engine control (FADEC), if needed.
Iran unveiled a domestically-made turbojet engine, dubbed Owj, in August 2016.
As reported, Owj, which is one of the most complicated aviation products, was built without any kind of foreign participation, either in the field of know-how or in the production of software and hardware.
The first domestic turbojet engine is capable of operating at an altitude of 50,000 feet.
