Re-exports of cars from Georgia fell sharply in the second quarter of 2020, Trend reports citing the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
According to the Geostat, in July cars worth $14.45 million were exported from Georgia abroad, which is $45.8 million or 76 percent decrease in comparison to the same period of 2019.
As reported, in July, the export of cars from Georgia to Azerbaijan decreased by 63 percent whereas exports to Ukraine, plunged by 97 percent.
In the past few years, the re-export of cars from Georgia has developed rapidly. Last year, exports increased by 68 percent year-on-year and reached $ 686.7 million. According to official statistics, the economic crisis caused as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on car re-exports.
The external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to $6.03 billion from January through July 2020, which is a decline of 17.6 percent compared to the same period of 2019. The exports equaled $1.75 billion (dipped by 16.8 percent ), while the imports stood at $4.27 billion (decrease of 17.9 percent ).
